Tips for Running with Your Dog!

I have never, other than during Cross Country, run without my favorite accessory--my dog. I hope that you will feel the same way after you read my handy tips on running with your dog!

  1. Practice Makes Perfect! Remember your first run? It's was pretty difficult and tiring, right? Well, keep that in mind when you start off running with your dog. You can't expect your new-found runner buddy to sprint through a 10k!
2. Check Her Health! Ask your vet to make the final OK when determining if your dog is the right running buddy for you.

3. Feel Empathy for Paws! You're lucky... you get to put on your fancy new running shoes when you go out for a jog, your dog does not! Remember to stay off of warm surfaces for a while in the summer and try running on grass or trails instead. Most importantly, stop immediately if your dog shows any signs of pain or uncomfort.

4. Fuel! I love using these energy boosters for Bigby (click here!) before I start a run. Do not use these when your dog is getting very tired or sore during a long walk, hike, jog or run. These cannot be traded for slowing down or resting. But, they ARE great to fuel up your pooch before or in the middle of a run! A very important fuel for active dogs is hopefully pretty obvious: WATER!

5. Rewards O'Plenty! Make sure to keep runs as positive as possible! Follow these simple don'ts for a great time:
  •              DON'T force your dog to run
  •              DON'T forget water
  •              DON'T forget to encourage
  •              DON'T forget to check on your dog's paws and muscles throughout the run
  •              DON'T forget to have fun!
